Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. On this day, American families gather around, have dinner and give thanks for the blessing of the year.

El Día de Acción de Gracias se celebra en los Estados Unidos el cuarto jueves de noviembre. Durante este día, familias americanas se juntan, cenan y dan gracias por la bendición del año.

History of Thanksgiving
This holiday has been celebrated since 1621. At that time, it was an occasion for the pilgrims to thank God for a plentiful harvest. The pilgrims had to abandon England because they were against some of the rituals of the Church of England. First, they moved to Holland and in 1620, they sailed to the USA on the famous ship The Mayflower. They carried lots of seeds, garden tools, gunpowder and firearms. After a long trip (65 days) they arrived in a place that they called Plymouth, the English town they came from.
The first Thanksgiving festival was in October 1621 and it lasted three days. The pilgrims invited the native Americans to join the celebration.In 1863 President Lincoln made it a national holiday.

Historia del Día de Acción de Gracias

 Esta fiesta se celebra desde 1621. En aquel tiempo, fue una ocasión para los peregrinos para agradecer a Dios por una cosecha abundante. Los peregrinos tuvieron que abandonar Inglaterra porque estaban contra algunos rituales de la Iglesia Anglicana. Primero, se fueron a Holanda y en 1620 navegaron a los EE.UU. en el famoso barco  Mayflower. Llevaron muchas semillas, herramientas de jardín, pólvora y armas de fuego. Después de un largo viaje (65 días) llegaron a un lugar que ellos llamaron Plymouth, la ciudad inglesa de la que venían.

 El primer festival de Acción de Gracias fue en octubre de 1621 y duró tres días. Los peregrinos invitaron a los indígenas Americanos a unirse a la celebración.

 En 1863 el Presidente Lincoln lo hizo fiesta nacional.

Thanksgiving Day Parade

There is a traditional Thanksgiving Day Parade with giant balloons and marching bands, in New York, which is shown on television. There is also the popular American Thanksgiving football game.

Desfile del Día de Acción de Gracias

 Hay un tradicional Desfile del Día de Acción de Gracias con globos gigantes y bandas que desfilan, en Nueva York, que muestran por televisión. Hay también el popular partido de fútbol americano del Día Acción de Gracias.

The traditional food prepared nowadays for this celebration is: stuffed turkey with gravy, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

La comida tradicional que se prepara hoy día para esta celebración es: pavo relleno con salsa, salsa de arándano y tarta de calabaza.

As a tradition, some days before the celebration the President of the United States pardons a turkey, the "White House Thanksgiving Turkey". People have the opportunity to give a name to the spared turkey, which is then taken back to a farm.

Como tradición, algunos días antes de la celebración, el Presidente de los Estados Unidos perdona un pavo, "El pavo del Día de Acción de Gracias de la Casa Blanca". La gente tiene la oportunidad de dar un nombre al pavo perdonado, que luego es devuelto a una granja.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving. It's the busiest shopping day in the USA and it's the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It's called like that because on that day all shops earn a lot of money from sales, so they go into the black (as opposed to be in the red, meaning that they have debts).

El viernes negro es el viernes posterior al Día de Acción de Gracias. Es el día de mayor negocio de compras en los EE.UU. y es el principio de la temporada de compras de Navidad. Lo llaman así porque durante este día todas las tiendas ganan mucho dinero de ventas, entonces ellos entran en negro (a diferencia de estar en rojo, queriendo decir que tienen deudas).
